CrankyGeeks // Episode 237 – The Farewell Episode

crankygeeks logo

Well, that does it – episode 237 will be the last episode of CrankyGeeks. We’ve been there since the beginning, and it’s been an incredible ride. I’m not the biggest fan of CrankyGeeks, and lots of people are way more into it than I am, but I really liked the wealth of talent and opinions that John C Dvorak managed to bring onto his show on a regular basis and the topics of conversation they covered. The show – and the voices – will be sorely missed. Here’s hoping they find an outlet somewhere else.

Sadly, CrankyGeeks was a casualty of Ziff Davis’ being bought and re-org’d, a pretty awful partnership with Mevio for DL.TV and CrankyGeeks, and most recently, the wind-down of all Ziff Davis podcasts (including PCMag Radio, PCMag After Hours, and PCMag Broadband) on request of the new owners in an attempt to refocus the company.

My opinions on that are mixed – new owners have new responsibilities, and I understand they need to get their arms around what ZD and its partners do and don’t do, but podcasts and community engagement on topics of interest and not just news are some of the things that make other big names in technology news successful. At the same time, that also means it can be argued that all of those things are being done elsewhere, and being done bigger and with more visibility – why keep doing something if you’re number 5 in a 10 person race?

Regardless, farewell CrankyGeeks – it’s been a blast!

On this final retrospective ep, John C Dvorak sits down with David Spark, Chris DiBona, and Cade Metz to revisit some of the crankiest moments of the past four years.
