The Screen Savers Return!

We’re breaking radio silence for very, very good reason here: The Screen Savers are coming back!

That’s right – the show you remember and love is coming back, with some familar and some new faces, and it’ll be called The New Screen Savers, airing weekly on TWiT – and we can imagine it being at home anywhere else.

Leo Laporte is spearheading the operation, of course, but you’ll see some more than familiar faces and names on the show, like Megan Morrone (now Megan Olsen), Mike Elgan, Jason Howell, and Father Robert Ballacer, and some other names who’ll show up as special guests and guest hosts, like original Screen Savers co-host Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Kate Botello, and many many more.

In a press release from TWiT, Leo says:

“For years people have asked me if we ever planned to create a new Screen Savers show,” said Leo Laporte, “and I’ve always said no. It was too daunting a task and I didn’t want to just copy our previous success. But after 10 years we’ve built an amazing team at TWiT and I think the time is right to create a new version of The Screen Savers, updated for a new generation and featuring the latest technology. The original Screen Savers show was all about celebrating the geek in all of us and empowering everyone to use technology for a better life. I think the world still needs to hear that message. The Screen Savers rise again!”

In addition to the announced guests, we spied a few additional names in this instagram photo snapped by Leo like Martin Sargent and Morgan Webb! You’ll also notice some familiar segments there too, like Call for Help, and a news roundup!

That’s not all – the show launches on May 2nd, and will record live every Satuday at 3pm PT, and stream live at http://live.twit.tv, and be available later via podcast – you can subscribe now at http://twit.tv/tnss!

We can’t say how excited we are to hear this news. This is going to be huge! All our thanks to the TWiT family for their awesome work, and for keeping the dream of great tech programming alive and available to more people than ever before!

Special thanks to Glenn Rubenstein for passing the news along to me!

Grab the Revision3 App for the XBox 360!

The team at Revision3, in addition to redesigning their website, just took the wraps off of a brand new app for the XBox 360, and if you’re like many people who use the game console not just as an gaming device but a bit of a home theater and video streamer, now you can get all of the greatness that Rev3 has to offer right on the big screen!

I installed the app last night, and it works like a charm – all the great videos from Revision3’s many shows on my huge TV screen? Nothing better. It’s featured under “apps” on your Xbox 360 dashboard, but for more info, hit the link below!

Jessica Corbin Appears on This Week’s Episode of Triangulation!

jessica corbin headshot

We don’t hear too much from Jessica Corbin these days, the last we heard from her she was leaving Tekzilla (remember when she used to host PopSiren, Tekzilla, and a little program called InDigital, way back in the day when Revision3 was just starting?) to work on her own startup, Fempire.

Now she’s back on an episode of Triangulation, chatting with Leo about everything that she’s been up to, life after TechTV, and everything in between now and then. If you’ve been curious what happened to this former TechTV star and current doing-it-for-herself star, this week’s Triangulation is a must watch. You can check it out here, and we wish all the best to Jessica in everything she’s doing these days!

G4 Kicks the Bucket, To Be Rebranded Again in 2013

g4 logo

There isn’t a lot of love around these parts for G4 one way or the other, but this news came as a particular surprise: G4 is planning to rebrand and restructure itself yet again in the coming year to meet a “new, modern male,” demographic that “goes beyond the dorm room or messy bachelor pad,” apparently. What that means really is unclear, although it likely spells the end for the 12-hour long Cops and Cheaters fests that G4 was known for, although I’ll miss seeing Ninja Warrior (appropriately known as Sasuke in Japan), although I’m sure it’s torrentable.

While we had always held out some hope that G4 would come to its senses and eventually incorporate more of TechTV’s angle and approach in its programming, after so many years it became apparent that the new ownership had neither the intelligence or inclination to do so, so it’s no surprise that even some of their stalwart employees who stayed on to do what they loved even as everything changed around them – namely Adam Sessler and Kevin Pereira, jumped ship before it went down. I think at this point, Morgan Webb as the only “original” G4 employee, much less former TechTV host to still be there.

SlashFilm broke the news, and as usual, G4 execs and spokespeople were too ashamed, too inept, or too busy hiding from the news to comment on the issue. You can read more at the link below.

“Less Geek, More GQ,” was their take on the rebranding – which is ironic, because there’s exceptionally little geeky about G4 remaining, and nothing respectable at all, frankly. SlashFilm expresses a little dismay that a network that at least in principle was dedicated to pop culture, gaming, and technology is going away, but I say good riddance – not because of the TechTV story (which is mentioned dozens of times in the comments, so people still remember clearly) but because the internet is a far better source for all of the programming and content that G4 tried to produce, what little good content G4 had, and much much better alternative content for people interested in science, technology, gaming, pop culture, and all things geek.

Revision3 Has Been Acquired by Discovery Communications!

revision3 logo

Congratulations to all of the folks at Revision3! Out favorite internet television network has been picked up by the fine folks at Discovery Communications, who as you know, are responsible for The Discovery Channel!

This is huge news, and while it could be both bad and good, it definitely means there’s some change in the works. Rev3, according to the announcements, is essentially staying as it is right now – all in San Fran, and all producing the content they have been for a while, but it’s certain that eventually some Rev3 programming will make its way to Discovery and vice versa, both of which are fantastic things.

It’s definitely a big event, and it’s going to mean big change – and we can’t think of two better networks to hook up with one another than these two.

TWiT Live Special :: Tribute and Remembrance of Steve Jobs

TWiT Live Logo

I had the privilege of watching this coverage last night, and the parade of journalists, fans, and technologists that came on the show to share their thoughts and insight on the life and passing of Steve Jobs was on-tone, on-point, elegant, and well well done.

There are a lot of articles and a lot of tributes and a lot of news about Steve Jobs’ passing yesterday, but the TWiT crew handled the news, his memory, and remembering him with a very special grace that’s more than worth watching. I hope you’ll tune in.
