DL.TV // Episode 56

dltv logo

Server problems at DL.TV caused the show’s live stream to die in the middle of the episode yesterday, but that doesn’t really matter to us, since we grab the video when it’s available. That being said, the show recorded just fine, and now it’s all ours.

This fine episode to cap off the week includes info on Nintendo’s announcement that the Nintendo Revolution is now the Nintendo “Wii,” (our thoughts exactly-in fact, you can read our thoughts [ here ], Samsung getting the nod for the chips in the iPod over PortalPlayer, and reviews of the new Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 and all of its follies. Jesse James Garrett from Adaptive Path comes on the show to talk Web 2.0, and tons of viewer questions!

Retail Computer Purchasing Experiences

money

Over at [H] Consumer (an offshoot site of HardOCP [ http://www.hardocp.com/ ]) some dilligent editors have published a pretty complete roundup of the kinds of service and information you should expect if you head into your average electronics store looking to buy a computer. And since many many people wind up actually going to an electronics store for computer purchasing and rely on the sales and technical staff in the store for accurate information and buying advice, this review is all that much more important.

The editors hit four different stores, Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry’s Electronics, and Circuit City, and came out of the experience with a lot of information about what you can and can’t expect when you walk into one of these stores armed only with the knowledge of what you’d like to do with your new computer and the trust that the staff there will be able to help you figure out what’s best for you-they won’t be able to, and even if they can, they might have an agenda that’ll keep them from giving you exactly what you need. The moral of the story? I’ll go ahead and spoil it for you-do your homework! Buying a computer isn’t a haphazard thing; you need to know what you’re getting into, what the differences between DVD-ROM and DVD-RW are, and why that difference might matter to you.

Regardless, head over to [H] Consumer to read the full article, including the editors’ experiences at each of the four stores, their comparison of the stores’ warranties, and their final advice to you, the consumer. Definitely worth reading!

Prolonging Your iPod Battery Life

ipod battery

Playlist Magazine [ http://playlistmag.com/ ] has an excellent cover story today with some really easy and useful tips to prolong the battery life of everyone’s favorite digital music and media player. I know, I know, in real life, the iPod doesn’t get what Apple says you should get in terms of hours and songs played, but I can tell you that it’s pretty close in my experience, but sometimes even 10 hours of straight play time isn’t enough to sate your hunger for music, podcasts, and episodes of Saturday Night Live. (Or in my case, 10 hours of leaving it on in your suitcase. Yeah, silly me.)

So while the tips include some simple and free things you can do, like using the Hold button to make sure that your iPod doesn’t get inadvertantly turned on while in your bag or in its case and keeping your iPod warm (something I wish I knew the time I left it in the car overnight in the middle of January), they also include some pretty decent ideas that cost money, like buying a new high-capacity battery and installing it (or having it installed) or buying an external battery pack to lengthen the life of your iPod. All this and more, and a definite must-read for all iPod owners and enthusiasts!

Top 10 Windows XP Tips of All Time

xp logo

Over at Yahoo! TechWeb, you can feast your eyes on the best Windows XP tips of all time. Seriously! All time, at least according to TechWeb. The tips are pretty solid though, and they’re not all for newbies and some of them are pretty good even for advanced users. For example, a lot of the tips are registry edits, like setting custom resolutions and halting background services that will improve your system’s overall performance, but some of the tips are good for even the most novice users, like scaling back System Restore, scrubbing the hard drive clean, and adding a second display to your computer.

Definitely check em out to see which ones apply to you, and if you’re not comfortable editing the registry, no biggie, some of them help you get around that; even so, it’d be a good time to learn, especially since some of these tips are right on the ball and will help improve the performance of your system dramatically. Enjoy!

This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Alex Lindsay, Robert Heron, and David Prager, and Kevin takes center stage right out of the gate to explain what Digg is and how Digg really works, especially in response to criticism lately that the editors of Digg have something to do with what stories make it to the front page and which stories get popular and which don’t. DiggNation // Episode 42

This week’s DiggNation has a lot to cover, it’s a shame that none of it is what you really thought was interesting about tech news this week-nope; the stores on DiggNation are all most-dugg stories at Digg.com; and that means this week we get stories like Miller’s experimental cold can that can lower beer temperature in a matter of minutes, the world’s best writing pen, ice chunks falling on San Francisco, an 8-year old Grand Theft Auto lover steals a car, and a woman comes down with the Bubonic Plague. Yum!

This Week In Media // Episode 2

This week, one of our newest podcasts, This Week In Media, is back with another fine roundtable discussion this time discussing the benefits and drawbacks of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, high definition next generation media content and how it’s produced, predictions from NAB, the EFF squares off against the RIAA again, and much much more.

The group is really starting to gel, I think, and the discussion is really taking off. It’s definitely a podcast for media lovers and people who dig the technical aspects of the behind the scenes work, and I’ll have to say the self-entitled “gimme something that works without me thinking about it” crew will probably not enjoy the high-level chat in this particular podcast. That being said, it’s definitely a winner, and I think it’s worth listening to. We’ll stay on top of it!

Product Review :: Eurocom M590K Emperor 19-Inch Laptop

emperor laptop

This thing is super huge. I’m not kidding at all.

CNet reviews the new 19-inch laptop from Eurocom, which is seriously huge as compared to even the 17-inch laptop that the reviewer has in the studio to compare it with; and even though the thing sports cool features like full-bodied stereo speakers and a full keyboard with number pad, the thing still looks a little plastic-y for being so expensive and so big. I would have liked to see a more solid, maybe metallic design to give the thing a little more substance, but I suppose for being as big as it is, a thicker case would have made the Emperor heavier.

I seriously wonder, with most people already considering the 17-inch widescreen generation of laptops as “desktop replacements,” whether that need will usher in any kind of demand for laptops this incredibly huge. I suppose time will tell.

Regardless, there’s a reason they call this thing the “Emperor.” Check out the CNet review and watch the video to learn more!

DL.TV // Episode 54

dltv logo

The week’s second fine blended edition of dl.tv is up for download now, and hits on some pretty amusing issues; including facing up to the debate as to whether Apple is still a computer company, why porn seems to be the download-to-dvd leader, and the triumphant release of HD-DVD disks, of which the dl.tv team finally has some! Now if only they can find a player….

All this and viewer questions on the week’s last dl.tv! Enjoy!
