Sony’s Rootkit DRM Timeline and Updates

If you’ve been paying attention to tech news lately, you’ve been hearing a lot about the rootkit that Sony has been using as DRM on some of its BMG CDs for the past several months. It’s been covered on TWIT [ http://www.twit.tv/ ], Security Now! [ http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm ] and a great deal of other technology news agencies. I put together a synopsis of the issue while it was breaking at my e-zine here:

And the issue has developed since then. BoingBoing, an amazing blog [ http://www.boingboing.net/ ] posted an excellent timeline of events yesterday here:

The trouble is that even since then, it’s been determined that Sony’s web uninstaller for the software is actually really dangerous and shouldn’t be used because even it’s so poorly written that it opens up yet another massive security hole in the process of trying to close another. Read about that tidbit over at the Freedom To Tinker blog in these posts:

Sony’s Web-Based Uninstaller Opens a Big Security Hole; Sony to Recall Discs
[ http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=927 ]

Update: Sony Uninstaller Hole Stays Open
[http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=928 ]

Sad. Very very sad.

Weezy and The Swish // Episode 23

On this week’s Weezy and The Swish, the duo interview Fritz Coleman [ http://www.nbc4.tv/nbc4/1310077/detail.html ], a playright, comedian, and a household name in the LA area. If you think it’s kind of silly that Weezy and Laura spent this podcast essentially interviewing their local weatherman, you’d be way off base. It’s definitely a fun interview. Check it out!

Lab Rats // Episode 4

This week’s edition of Lab Rats is up and ready to go! This week Andy and Sean show us how to use msconfig in Windows to control what loads when our computers start up. Advanced geeks might think this is a little pedestrian, but speaking as someone who has to wade through slow booting and slow loading computers every day, I can say that msconfig is probably one of the most underrated tools already built into windows. It’s very powerful and very easy to use, and gives you a great deal of control over the performance of your system. It’s definitely worth knowing how to work with. The pair say they can cut your boot time in half by using msconfig properly, and it’ll help you get rid of unwanted spyware and adware that load when your computer starts up, whether you want it to or not. And of course, the kitties make their grand appearances. Head on over and grab it now:

This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 30

And the thirtieth TWIT is in the can! [ http://www.makinwavs.com/ ] The video is out at the same time, and links are available in the show notes. For those of you just looking for the audio, the TechTVForever mirror is up and running. Lab Rats // Episode 3

This week’s edition of Lab Rats is up and ready for download! This Week In Tech [TWIT] // Episode 29

This week’s TWIT discusses the topic that everyone’s been talking about lately, Sony using rootkit technology to impliment DRM with it’s copy protected CDs. This week’s hosts are Leo Laporte, Patrick Norton, Roger Chang, David Prager, and Alex Lindsay, and they launch right into the discussion by accusing Sony of putting rootkits on your PC in order to “protect” their copyrighted content. Also, is Microsoft making moves against Google by announcing Microsoft Office Live and Windows Live? The new Yahoo Maps is finally online, and they’re pretty good. Again-another company definitely taking aim at Google. Security Now! // Episode 12 (Early Episode!)

Security Now! fans rejoice! Leo and Steve have gotten together early to publish the most recent Security Now! that covers the whole debaucle over Sony/BMG using rootkit technology to impliment DRM on the machines of people who have purchased DRM protected music from Sony recently. The story broke earlier this week, partly due to the excellent work of J Alex Halderman, who runs the Freedom To Tinker blog [ http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=919 ]

and he goes on with the story in the following posts:

The issue is important for everyone, and if you want a good first step to protect yourself, disabling autorun on your home computer is definitely a good idea. But back to point: Leo and Steve get together early to discuss exactly what’s going on, and to try and boil it down for the everyday listener and provide some good tips to keep this kind of nonsense off of your computer and protect your personal rights and privacy. Links to tools and more information can be found in the episode notes. Snag it today!
