CommandN // Episode 66

commandn logo

This week on CommandN, Amber and Mikey hit on the biggest news of the previous week, Google’s purchase of YouTube. They chat about what the founders of YouTube have had to say about the deal, what it means for Google and YouTube as a collaborative entity, and more. Additionally, they talk about Firefox parties, and World of Warcraft fans are all over the South Park episode that made fun of them, breaking it down bit by bit. All this and the weekly TechTips and Web Picks as you’ve come to expect!

This Week in Tech [TWiT] // Episode 73

twit logo

This week’s TWIT is here and ready to go, although all of the RSS feeds for TWIT network podcasts appear to be down and are still down as of this writing! Yikes! So if you’re trying to get your TWIT network podcasts through iTunes or Democracy or another feed-catching player, you’re out of luck, but you can definitely download them directly!

On this week’s TWiT, Leo Laporte, John C. Dvorak, Alex Lindsay, Wil Harris, and Jerry E. Pournelle all gather around the table to hash out some important business; that is to say, John C Dvorak gets to eat his own words! Last week he said that Google would never buy YouTube, and no sooner than the words left his mouth did the deal go down for over 1.65 billion USD in stock from Google. It’s okay though, this isn’t the first time John C has had to eat his own words. I mean, just look at his wikipedia entry!

Also covered on this week’s show are the implications of the buyout, Congress essentially kills online gambling, a group of MacBook owners are mulling a class action lawsuit over the so-called “random shutdown” issue (good for them! Maybe if they all get together in the same room, people will realize there’s all of maybe 10 of them, Apple’s offered support to all of them already, and there’s nothing to this-just another issue amplified by the echo-chamber of the internet), Creative removes FM recording features from its Zen media players, the death of Eudora (about time!), and much much more.

This Week in Media // Episode 22 and 23

twim logo

At first I thought that I missed a couple of episodes of This Week in Media, but it looks like they’re both out at the same time!

In episode 22, Leo Laporte, Alex Lindsay, and Frank Linhares get back to some of the premises that started the This Week in Media podcast, global media trends, the effects of globalization on the media and on varying media markets, and what the expanding global marketplace means for media talent.

In episode 23, Alex Lindsay, Scott Bourne, Kenji Kato, Emery Wells, and John Foster all take the figurative helm to chat about the effects of last week’s biggest news, that Google dropped a $1.65 billion bomb on YouTube, of which the founders of the latter are doubtlessly happy over, and some other media news that’s lurking under the surface, like George Lucas’ quiet exit from film.

CrankyGeeks // Episode 31

crankygeeks logo

This week on CrankyGeeks is a return to normalcy, since apparently there were more than a fair share of whining morons after last week’s show featuring Neil Gaiman just wasn’t technical enough or wasn’t cranky enough for some of the folks who complained in the comments. Personally I thought it was a great show, but you can’t make everyone happy, and it’s always the few who feel like they have some self-entitled right for things to please them personally from their armchairs who come out ot complain. But anyway-another great show-just as good as last week-is lined up this week.

On this week’s CrankyGeeks John C. is back at the table with Sebastian Rupley, West Coast Editor, PC Magazine; Matt Mullenweg, Founder, WordPress.org; and Gary Messiana, CEO, Netli, Inc. They discuss Google’s purchase of YouTube, PS3 orders are already all over eBay, Sony rolls out 50GB Blu-Ray discs, Facebook wages a voter registration campaign, a new study says that over 50% of MySpace users are over 35, the rise of IPTV set-top boxes, and the million dollar contest by Netflix to design a better movie reccomendation system.

Futures in Biotech // Episode 6

fib logo

This episdoe of Futures in Biotech brings Dr. Linda Griffith to the table with Leo and Marc Pelletier to talk about tissue engineering; Dr. Griffith is a leader in the field, a field of research that she, and other researchers in the field, hope that eventually will lead to the ability of labs and even hospitals to grow tissues and organs in the lab for replacement based on a patient’s own tissue or needs. Imagine the possibilities; having to have a lung removed due to cancer but being able to grow a new one to replace it; or needing a skin graft but being able to grow that skin to be grafted as opposed to taking it from another part of the body. Dr. Griffin’s work is important to medical science, and more links to her work is available in the show notes.

MacBreak Weekly // Episode 10

macbreakweekly logo

This week on MacBreak Weekly, Leo Laporte, Merlin Mann, Alex Lindsay, and Scott Bourne gather around to chat about the new Mac ads (my favorite is the “counselor” ad, which pretty much is exactly the behavior the Apple haters exhibit when dismissing Apple’s ads or Apple in general), their issues with video and TV download from the iTunes store, and the root behind the Adobe/Intel rivalry.

Amber is back! The show truly is Inside the Net with Amber MacArthur again, and Leo joins her for the first time in a long time as they chat with Sutha Kamal of Nakama, [ http://nakama.ca/ ] a moblog site that has more features than pretty much any other moblog site out there, including the ability to call you back after you send your picture so you can record an audio caption! How cool is that? Amber and Leo chat with Sutha to hear all about these features and more features that make Nakama stand out from the crowd.

Lab Rats // Episode 45

labrats logo

No kitties this week! Andy and Sean head down to the Podcast Expo to see what they can see and talk to who they can chat with, including Microsoft blogger Robert Scoble, Betsy Weber of TechSmith, and RocktBoom’s Andrew Baron. The conversations and insights are really enlightening to hear, especially considering, as they reveal in the show, that podcasting is only about 18 months old. Hearing what these folks have to say about this impressive new media is definitely a treat.

This week on TWiT, Leo Laporte, John C. Dvorak, David Prager, Patrick Norton, and Paul Thurrott gather around the table to discuss the week’s tech news. Among the topics they get to are why they all agree that Google will never buy YouTube (boy were they wrong), Windows Vista RC2 is out and about and looks pretty polished and finished, Leo continues his crusade against the word “podcast” in favor of his own term, “netcast,” the World Trade Organization is holding AllOfMP3 over Russia’s head in its application to join, but AllOfMP3 doesn’t seem to care, and much much more.

DiggNation // Episode 66

diggnation logo

This week on DiggNation, Alex and Kevin are back at Digg HQ to do the podcast, which makes the show look oddly more professional, I have to admit. Among the stories they cover this week are a remarkable new way to make sure the airlines don’t lose your luggage: packing a gun. Additionally, a repository of every episode of Futurama, the “Most Annoying Website In The World,” and sadly it’s not MySpace, Firefox 2 hits RC1, and much much more.

Ctrl+Alt+Chicken // Episode 8

ctrl+alt+chicken logo

A new episode of Ctrl+Alt+Chicken! A full episode, no less, no more mini bites! On this episode, Alex and Heather show us a delicious dish that’s near to my heart, Crab Cakes! They use a pretty simple recipe that calls for only a few ingredients but a whole lot of frying. Sounds delicious. For those of you subscribing in iTunes, you might have to re-search the iTunes podcast directory and re-add the feed in order to get the new episodes and get rid of the nasty timeouts from the old feed. Check out the recipe with the episode notes!
