New Show! :: HD Nation // Episode 1

HD Nation Logo

Patrick Norton and Robert Heron are back together, just under a different banner now! Together they make up the crew of HD Nation – a new video podcast at Revision3 dedicated to all things high-def, and making sure you’re picking up the right TVs, the right monitors, the right cables, the right accessories, and more!

It’s a shame that Patrick and Robert seem to be leaving DL.TV behind, but at least there’s another show where we can get our Patrick and Robert fix. Since HD Nation will be targeted directly at home theatre gear, they’ll have plenty to talk about!

On the first episode, they discuss bargain HDMI cables, YouTube upgrades for HD video, the contrast ratio myth, and much more! Subscribe today!

Systm Makes the Switch to Tekzilla

systm logo

As mentioned earlier, Systm has folded into Tekzilla, and Patrick has made an announcement available here.

Patrick pays homage to the fact that Systm was Revision3’s first show, and even though it certainly won’t be the last, we haven’t seen the end of the Systm crew or their amazing projects!

New DL.TV Format and Shows Coming!

dltv logo

If you guys don’t know already, DL.TV has been working behind the scenes since its last episode before the new year to revamp the show and its format. You can read more over at the DL.TV Web site. They’ve even managed to publish a few short segments called “DL.TV Bytes,” on topics from great GPS devices to mobile phones for Mother’s Day.

Sadly, those shows aren’t using the same feed at the regular DL.TV episodes, so if you’re just subscribing in your favorite podcast catcher and wondering where they are, you’ll have to visit the site to grab them. In any event though, if you follow @dltv over on Twitter, you can keep up with the news and progress around bringing the new show to you!

Also, if you act fast, you can have your geekly setup showcased in the show’s new opening – they’re soliciting photos from dedicated viewers, so act fast!

Congratulations Amber!

amber macarthur

We’re probably the last people on the block to hear this, but Amber MacArthur had a baby! The reason she’s been away from commandN and net@night for the past couple of weeks is because the Web’s favorite video podcasting pioneer is now a new mommy!

On February 8th, Amber gave birth to Connor, and I understand that both mother, father, and child are all happy, healthy, and well. In fact, Amber is already back to blogging and tweeting about the experience!

Congratulations!

Revision3 Cuts Shows: Internet Superstar, Pixel Perfect, popSiren Among the Axed

revision3 logo

It’s a sad but sobering reminder that even the venerable Revision3 is a business; a network that has to make money and earn the keep of the shows that they produce on a regular basis. If the shows don’t manage to find an audience or don’t bring in the sponsorship revenue to make them worth producing, they’ve got to go, like any TV network and their TV shows.

Of course, those of us who have been around TechTV Forever for a while are accustomed to this; we know the dissapointment of losing some of our favorite shows, so the announcement comes with a little pain.

So Jim Louderback announced on the Revision3 blog today (courtesy of my colleagues at AppScout):

We’ve had a number of great successes here at Revision3, including Diggnation, Tekzilla and The Totally Rad Show. But not everything pans out. Just as in the past, when we ended shows that just weren’t building audiences or driving revenue, we had to make changes. As you may have heard, today we had to make some tough staffing decisions as we ended the run of a few of our shows.

For our long-running Photoshop show Pixel Perfect, it’s the end of a show that’s done over a hundred episodes, and delivered essentially a graduate level course in graphic design and technique. For PopSiren and Internet Superstar, it’s the end of 2 shows that had great promise, but never really found their audience.

For two of the shows, we’re simply stopping our distribution agreement, but the shows will live on. You’ll still be able to watch Epic Fu, and Wine Library, both at their own sites, and through new and existing distribution partnerships. Epic Fu will be available on Revision3 through mid December, Wine Library ends its Revision3 run today. We remain huge fans of these two shows, even though they don’t fit our long-term plans at Revision3.

All past episodes of these shows, as well as all other shows no longer in production, will still be available for download from Revision3.com in our show archives.

Well that sucks. Here’s what I’m thinking:

Our good friend Bert Monroy will sadly go by the wayside, but admittedly Pixel Perfect had more then run its course. I’m sure it won’t the be the last we hear from him – I’m certain that he’ll make an appearance on episodes of Tekzilla or Systm when Photoshop tips are called for.

Internet’s Martin Sargent knows what it’s like to be cancelled. Over, and over, and over, and over again. It really really sucks that Internet Superstar didn’t get much traction, but frankly, I think they spread themselves a little too thin by producing too many episodes – doesn’t hurt that they all but ran out of superstars to interview and wound up interviewing anyone who got a 5-star funny video on YouTube after a while. Still, it’s really really sad to see the show go, and Martin – as always – will be sorely missed. Martin: we salute you.

popSiren is another show that’s sad to see go: the show was supposed to be for the modern geek girl, the technologically inclined intelligent woman who defied the “ew computers” stereotype. There are plenty of ladies like that out there, I’m just saddened that they didn’t find popSiren – I think popSiren was just light-years ahead of it’s time.

Like Jim said, for Epic Fu and Wine Library, they just won’t be part of the Revision3 network anymore. That’s something of a shame; I myself hadn’t even gotten around to giving Epic Fu a fair shake, and I’d been meaning to subscribe to Wine Library, but maybe it just didn’t resonate with the tech-heavy audience at Revision3. That being said, both shows are already immensely popular, and their fans will follow them both wherever they go. Just because they won’t be syndicated at Revision3 doesn’t mean the shows are over, so look them up either in the iTunes podcast directory or at their respective sites and subscribe directly:

[ Epic Fu | Wine Library ]

If this feels familiar to the old timers around here, it should – but at least this time it’s not cutting off your nose to spite your face; it’s trimming the fat to keep the meat healthy. A number of the commenters over at Revision3 are absolutely furious with the news, and are screaming with vitrol and anger that I haven’t seen since well – since the times that spawned this blog. That being said, I’m with everyone who’s dissapointed to see the shows go, but I don’t think this is the end-all-be-all of Revision3. Traffic doesn’t lie, subscriptions and downloads don’t lie, but anecdotal preferences do. One incredibly passionate Internet Superstar download doesn’t equal the hundreds that may be needed to keep up with the other shows.

With the farm leagues running strong at Revision3 Beta, there’s doubtlessly more shows on the way, and only so many resources to go around. Here’s hoping some of the shows coming out of beta will match the ones being sunset!

Tech Closeup Update with Marc Levneson…Airing This Week!

tech closeup site sm

Marc Levenson, 3-time Emmy Award winning science and technology correspondant and all around awesome guy, just provided us with another update on his new segment going into syndication, Tech Closeup!

The show will be going into syndication in multiple major markets this week, and he’s even provided us with a promo video that will show you what the show is all about that you’ll probably see on your local channels. If you’ll remember, Marc was a familiar face on TechTV in the good old days, and has been steady at work bringing real technology programming and content back to mainstream television.

Great job Marc, and we all look forward to seeing Tech Closeup on television very very soon!

Amber MacArthur’s New Show: WebNation!

webnation logo

Brian McKechnie, the man (sometimes) behind the scenes (and sometimes in front of the camera!) of CommandN and Bamcat.com, emailed me to inform me of something I’ve been missing, most importantly, Amber MacArthur’s new show on CityTV, WebNation! The show is available as a video podcast, and runs as a 30 min. bi-weekly television show on Citytv in Toronto, Canada. I knew that Amber had left Call for Help for better and brighter things at CityTV, but now her exploits aren’t just available to the lucky viewers that get to see her in Toronto, you can subscribe to the show via iTunes or download it directly from the CityNews website anywhere in the world!

WebNation is already in its 5th episode, and we’ll start tracking it from here out! You can check out the show at the WebNation site at CityNews and download the most recent episode, and check out past episodes! Looking at the breakdown of show topics, it rings a bit like CommandN, but it’s definitely got some good and different stuff. Head over and subscribe now!

Tech Closeup with Marc Levenson Update!

tech closeup site sm

If you’re new to Tech Closeup and don’t know what this is all about, check out the backstory first:

[ Tech Closeup with Marc Levenson…Coming Soon to a TV Near You! ]
[ Tech Closeup Update from Marc Levenson ]
[ Marc Levenson’s New Show :: Tech Closeup! ]

Marc Levenson just provided us with another exciting update, and it looks like Tech Closeup will be available in even more venues than previously thought! Here’s the scoop, straight from Marc:

It seems there’s a lot of demand out there for fun, easy to follow science and technology programming aimed at the average non-scientific layman. Tech Closeup has increased its broadcast clearances to include some dominant major markets. We’ve got commitments now in San Diego (Fox), Sacramento (ABC), as well as Detroit, Tampa, Washington D.C., St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Nashville, Dayton, Saginaw, and at least ten other cities. We’re expecting at least ten to fifteen more markets to commit by the time Tech Closeup launches in September. Stay tuned!

That’s great news, not just for the old TechTV fan crowd, but for anyone who’s eager to see good, comprehensive, intelligent, and fun technology programming on television. A lot of the old TechTV heads simply don’t think it’s possible to be successful on mainstream television when talking about technology, but it looks like there’s more than one way to bring tech to the small screen! Good job Marc, we’ll be looking forward to seeing you on our TV screens!

Tech Closeup with Marc Levenson…Coming Soon to a TV Near You!

tech closeup site mockup

If you’re new to the whole Tech Closeup story we’ve been following, check out our previous updates:
[ Marc Levenson’s New Show :: Tech Closeup! ]
[ Tech Closeup Update from Marc Levneson! ]

We just received exciting news from Marc Levenson regarding the future of his show, Tech Closeup, slated to air on major networks later this year:

Here’s a little update: Tech Closeup has been cleared to air in St. Louis, Washington D.C., Tampa, Nashville, Dayton, Saginaw, Shreveport, Huntsville, Spokane, Springfield Mo., Tallahassee and Yakima Wa. We’re also cleared in San Juan and The U.S. Virgin Islands. By the end of May, our syndicator expects we’ll be cleared in a minimum of 35 TV markets for our initial rollout in September. The show has been reformatted for commercial broadcast and the feedback has been wonderful. I’ll have more as we get closer to our airdate. Stay tuned!

We’re getting closer, and personally, my being in the Washington DC area never looked better for bringing quality technology programming back to the airwaves. We’re looking forward to it, Marc!
